A coppy of a letter from James Island in the river of Gambia the 1st of May 1661.

The writers were factors for the group which ultimately became the Royal African Company of England, and they report here on the beginnings of their establishment in the Gambia River, noting efforts to trade in ivory, wax, hides, and slaves, while hoping for trade in gold, and cultivation of the land near the river.
